Disney Traditions vs Disney Showcase Which Collection Is Right For You?

Collectors Guides

Should I collect Disney Traditions or Disney Showcase?

The honest answer?

Neither collection is better. They're simply designed for different types of collectors.

A perfect example is these two adorable Dory and Nemo figurines. Both capture the same beloved characters from Finding Nemo, yet they couldn't feel more different.

Two Artists. Two Completely Different Visions

Disney Traditions (Jim Shore)

Disney Traditions Nemo & Dory Floating Friendship 4031492 by Jim Shore

The Disney Traditions collection, designed by renowned folk artist Jim Shore, combines Disney magic with handcrafted American folk art.

Rather than aiming for complete screen accuracy, Jim Shore creates pieces that look as though they've been lovingly carved from wood and painted by hand.

You'll notice:

  • Quilt-inspired patterns
  • Patchwork textures
  • Muted, earthy colours
  • Rustic bases
  • Handcrafted appearance

The result feels warm, nostalgic and timeless.

In the Dory example, you can immediately see the geometric carving across her body, the textured coral, and the softer paint palette that has become synonymous with Jim Shore's work.

Disney Showcase

Disney Showcase Dory & Nemo Collectable Figurine

Disney Showcase takes almost the opposite approach.

These figurines aim to recreate Disney characters exactly as we know them from the films.

Expect:

  • Bright, vibrant colours
  • Smooth glossy finishes
  • Screen-accurate proportions
  • Modern styling
  • Minimal artistic interpretation

The Showcase Dory almost looks as though she has swum straight out of Pixar's animation.

Her bright blue finish, glossy paintwork and expressive eyes capture the playful personality Disney fans instantly recognise.

Why Some Collectors Prefer Disney Traditions

Many collectors fall in love with Traditions because every piece feels like a little work of art.

The carved textures catch the light beautifully and make the figurines feel handcrafted rather than factory-produced.

Some collectors even say they enjoy displaying Traditions pieces around the home because they blend naturally with traditional décor and don't immediately shout "Disney".

Pros

✔ Unique artistic style

✔ Incredible detail and textures

✔ Instantly recognisable Jim Shore designs

✔ Huge range covering classics and newer films

✔ Beautiful seasonal collections

Possible Downsides

✖ Colours are often softer than the films

✖ Characters aren't always completely screen accurate

✖ Some collectors don't enjoy the folk-art patterns

Why Some Collectors Prefer Disney Showcase

Showcase pieces celebrate the characters exactly as Disney created them.

If you've ever wanted Pixar or Disney characters to look as though they've stepped straight out of the screen, this collection delivers.

Many Showcase pieces also experiment with fashion, couture and elegant interpretations, particularly in the Haute Couture and Couture de Force ranges.

Pros

✔ Very faithful to the films

✔ Bright, eye-catching colours

✔ Glossy premium finish

✔ Great for fans wanting movie accuracy

✔ Excellent modern display pieces

Possible Downsides

✖ Less texture than Traditions

✖ Can appear more "ornamental" than handcrafted

✖ Smaller range of artistic variation

Which Holds Its Value Better?

This is another question I hear regularly.

The answer isn't straightforward.

Both collections contain pieces that become highly collectible.

Value usually depends more on:

  • Production numbers
  • How long a piece was available
  • Character popularity
  • Condition
  • Whether the original box is included
  • Collector demand

Some Disney Showcase figures now sell for several times their original retail price.

Likewise, retired Disney Traditions - particularly villains, park exclusives and limited editions - can become exceptionally sought after.

Rather than choosing based on investment potential alone, I always recommend collecting the pieces that genuinely bring you joy!

Can You Collect Both?

Absolutely!

In fact, many collectors (myself included!) enjoy mixing both collections.

A Disney Traditions piece can provide wonderful texture and warmth, while a Disney Showcase figurine brings bold colour and screen accuracy.

Displayed together, they create a collection full of personality and variety.

My Thoughts

Looking at these two Dory figurines side by side perfectly demonstrates why there doesn't have to be a "winner."

The Disney Showcase version captures Dory exactly as Pixar imagined her—bright, glossy and wonderfully expressive.

The Disney Traditions version feels like a handcrafted sculpture, full of texture and artistic charm that rewards a closer look.

If you love Disney animation exactly as it appears on screen, Showcase may steal your heart.

If you appreciate craftsmanship, texture and artistic interpretation, Disney Traditions might become your favourite.

Or... you may find yourself doing exactly what many collectors do and making room on your shelves for both!
