Should You Keep the Box? A Disney Collector's Guide

If you've ever unpacked a beautiful Disney figurine and wondered whether the box deserves a place in the loft, garage or recycling bin, you're certainly not alone.

It's one of the most common questions collectors ask, and the honest answer is... it depends.

Whether you collect Disney Traditions, Disney Showcase, Couture de Force, Britto or other Disney collectables, keeping the original packaging can make a real difference—but not always. Here's what to consider before you decide.

Why keeping the box can be worthwhile

It often increases resale value

For many collectors, an original branded box forms part of the complete package. If you ever decide to sell your figurine, having the correct box will usually make it more desirable.

While an unboxed figurine can still be valuable - especially if it's retired or particularly rare - a boxed example will often attract more interest and may achieve a higher selling price.

Better protection

Disney figurines often include delicate details such as flowers, feathers, tails, hats and outstretched arms. The original packaging is designed specifically to protect those fragile areas during storage or transport.

If you move house or decide to post a figurine in the future, having the original packaging can make life much easier.

A complete collector's item

Many collectors simply enjoy owning an item exactly as it left the manufacturer. Original boxes, certificates and protective inserts all contribute to that feeling of owning a complete piece.

When it's perfectly fine to recycle the box

Not everyone has unlimited storage space.

If you buy figurines purely because they make you smile and you have no intention of selling them, keeping dozens - or even hundreds - of empty boxes may not be practical.

Many collectors happily display their figurines and choose to recycle the packaging, especially for pieces that are still in production and relatively easy to replace.

There is no "wrong" way to collect Disney.

Does every box add value?

Not necessarily.

A pristine original box is usually the most desirable. However, if the box is heavily damaged, damp, torn or missing important inserts, it may add less value than people expect.

The figurine itself will almost always remain the most important part of the collection.

My own approach

Whenever possible, I like to keep the original boxes.

Not because every piece will become hugely valuable, but because they provide extra protection and are appreciated by many collectors if the figurine is ever sold.

That said, I would never avoid buying a figurine simply because it's unboxed. Some retired pieces are incredibly difficult to find, and I'd much rather own a beautiful unboxed example than miss out altogether!

Buying unboxed figurines

Many collectors worry about buying unboxed pieces, but there are plenty of excellent examples available.

When purchasing an unboxed figurine, I'd recommend looking for:

  • Clear photographs from every angle.
  • Honest descriptions of any flaws or repairs.
  • Confirmation that the piece will be packaged carefully for delivery.
  • A seller with good feedback and a reputation for accurate descriptions.

An unboxed figurine that has been well cared for is often a far better purchase than a boxed one with hidden damage.

At the end of the day, collecting Disney should be about enjoyment.

If you have the space, keeping the original box is usually worthwhile and may help preserve both value and protection. If you don't, don't let that stop you from building a collection you love.

The most important thing isn't whether your figurine has its box - it's the memories, stories and happiness it brings every time you see it on display.

Happy collecting!
