One of my favourite things about running Collectable Figurines is seeing where the pieces go after they leave me. If you have read any of my other blog posts, you will already know that running Collectable Figurines is SO much more that just selling to me. As a lifelong Disney fan, I tend to become rather emotionally attached to them!
A figurine may only be with me temporarily (I like to think of myself as their foster mum!), but once it reaches its new owner, it becomes part of a much bigger and far more personal collection.
One of my wonderful customers recently sent me this photograph of their Monsters, Inc. display - and, with their kind permission, I simply had to share it!
Welcome to Monstropolis
This display brings together characters, colours and memorabilia from the wonderfully chaotic world of Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University.
Sulley takes centre stage, with his distinctive blue fur and purple spots beautifully reimagined through Jim Shore’s distinctive folk-art styling. His almost pineapple-patterned body adds an unexpected tropical touch, while the decorative base introduces the colourful carved patterns for which the Disney Traditions collection is so well known.
Beside him stands Mike Wazowski, complete with his enormous eye and cheeky personality. Placing Mike on a clear acrylic riser is a particularly clever choice: it gives this smaller figurine extra height and ensures that he remains an important part of the scene rather than disappearing behind Sulley.
These figurines display so well together and I adore seeing them as a pair!
A Monsters Inc. Display With Layers
What makes this collection particularly effective is that it doesn’t rely upon figurines alone.
Behind the display is a corkboard filled with an assortment of colourful Monsters, Inc. pins. Familiar faces from across the films appear at different heights and angles, creating a playful backdrop that feels entirely appropriate for Monstropolis!
The pins also introduce another scale to the collection. Your eye moves naturally from the tiny character designs on the board to the larger three-dimensional figurines below, making the whole shelf feel much more detailed and interesting.
The bright blue Monsters University folder displayed alongside them adds another strong splash of colour. Its bold university crest instantly establishes the theme and helps connect the display to Mike and Sulley’s earlier adventures on campus.
Clever Use of a Display Case for Disney Figurines
The mirrored acrylic display case is both practical and visually effective.
It protects the figurines from dust and accidental knocks, but the mirrored back also allows more of the pieces to be seen. Jim Shore figurines often include lovely sculpted and painted details around their sides and backs, so a mirror is an excellent way to enjoy features that might otherwise remain hidden.
The clear case keeps the collection protected without visually closing it away, while the transparent risers create different levels within a relatively small space. It is a wonderful example of how even one shelf can become a thoughtfully arranged miniature exhibition.
Why This Monsters Inc. Display Works So Well
There are several lovely ideas that other collectors could borrow from this arrangement:
- Choose one clear theme, such as a particular film, character or Disney world.
- Combine figurines with pins, artwork, books or other meaningful memorabilia.
- Use clear risers to prevent smaller pieces from becoming hidden.
- Introduce different heights to give the display depth.
- Consider a mirrored background to reveal additional details.
- Protect treasured pieces with an acrylic display case where possible.
- Use one or two larger branded items to frame and strengthen the overall theme.
Most importantly, the display feels personal. It hasn’t simply been arranged according to size or value; it celebrates a genuine affection for the characters and their world.
Collections Are Made to Be Enjoyed
There is no single “correct” way to display a collection. Some collectors prefer perfectly symmetrical cabinets, while others create busy scenes filled with figures, pins and keepsakes. The best displays are those that make their owners happy every time they walk past them. I can really relate to this - there are certain figurines that simply make me smile when I see them
This Monsters, Inc. collection is colourful, characterful and full of clever details. It captures the humour and warmth of the films while allowing each individual piece its own moment in the spotlight.
