How to Care for Your Collectable Figurines

Collectors Guides

A beautiful figurine is more than just something to place on a shelf.

It may remind you of a favourite Disney film, a special character, a holiday, a gift from someone you love or simply the thrill of finally finding a piece you have been searching for.

With the right care, collectable figurines can remain clean, bright and beautiful for many years. The good news is that caring for them does not need to be complicated. In fact, the gentlest methods are often the safest.

Here are my best tips for looking after your collection.

1. Dust Little and Often

Dust is one of the biggest enemies of displayed figurines.

It settles in small creases, textured clothing, carved details and awkward little corners. Over time, it can become harder to remove, especially if the figurine is displayed near a kitchen, fireplace or open window.

A soft, dry make-up brush or artist’s brush is ideal for regular dusting. It allows you to gently sweep dust away from detailed areas without applying pressure.

For larger, smoother sections, a clean microfibre cloth can also work well.

The key word here is gentle. Avoid vigorous rubbing, particularly around delicate areas such as fingers, crowns, accessories, tails, wings and thin decorative elements.

2. Avoid Harsh Cleaning Products

It can be tempting to reach for a household cleaning spray, antibacterial wipe or furniture polish, but these products may damage the finish of a figurine.

Painted resin, stone resin, porcelain and mixed-material pieces can all react differently to cleaning products. Chemicals may dull the surface, lift paint, leave a residue or affect protective coatings.

For the figurines I prepare for sale, I use only water and cotton buds. This gives me more control and allows me to carefully clean small areas without soaking the piece.

A slightly damp cotton bud can be gently rolled over dirty areas, followed by a dry cotton bud to remove any remaining moisture.

Never fully submerge a figurine in water.

3. Take Extra Care With Delicate Details

Some figurines are surprisingly sturdy. Others seem to have been designed specifically to test our nerves.

Thin staffs, fingers, crowns, feathers, wings, tails and accessories are often the most vulnerable areas. When lifting or moving a figurine, always hold it securely around the base or the strongest central part of the piece.

Avoid picking a figurine up by its head, arm, accessory or decorative feature.

It is also worth looking carefully before cleaning. Small cracks, previous repairs or weakened areas may not be immediately obvious.

4. Keep Figurines Away From Direct Sunlight

Direct sunlight can gradually affect colours and finishes.

A sunny windowsill may look lovely, but prolonged exposure can cause paint to fade or certain materials to discolour. Heat from strong sunlight may also affect glued elements or mixed materials.

Try to display your collection somewhere bright but away from constant direct sunlight.

This is especially important for brightly painted pieces and figurines with fabric, glitter, faux fur or other decorative finishes.

5. Avoid Damp, Steam and Sudden Temperature Changes

Bathrooms, kitchens, conservatories, lofts and garages are not always the best places for collectable figurines.

Steam, damp and fluctuating temperatures may affect paint, adhesives, metal elements and packaging. Moisture can also encourage dust and grime to cling to the surface.

A dry room with a relatively stable temperature is usually the safest choice.

It is also sensible to keep figurines away from radiators, open fires and strong heat sources.

6. Choose a Safe Display Position

A good display should be beautiful, but it also needs to be practical.

Avoid placing valuable or delicate figurines too close to the edge of a shelf. Make sure the surface is level, sturdy and unlikely to be knocked.

It is worth thinking about:

  • Pets with adventurous tails
  • Children reaching for favourite characters
  • Doors that cause nearby furniture to shake
  • Curtains that may catch a figurine
  • Shelves positioned above seating areas
  • Overcrowded displays where pieces can knock against one another

Leaving a little space around each figurine also makes the collection easier to dust and allows each piece to stand out.

7. Be Careful With Display Cabinets

Display cabinets are a brilliant way to reduce dust and protect a collection, but figurines inside them will still need occasional cleaning.

Make sure shelves are secure and capable of holding the combined weight of the collection. Some larger resin figurines can be heavier than they look.

Avoid cramming too many pieces onto one glass shelf, and always check that figurines are stable before closing the cabinet door.

8. Keep Boxes and Packaging Dry

The question of whether to keep the original box is a personal one, but if you do keep it, store it carefully.

Boxes are best kept somewhere dry, clean and away from strong sunlight. Damp storage areas can cause cardboard to soften, stain or develop a musty smell.

If the figurine has a foam insert, make sure it is completely dry and free from dust before putting the piece away.

Do not force a figurine into its packaging. Take time to identify the correct position, and never press against delicate sections.

Photographing the packaging arrangement before removing a figurine can be very helpful, particularly with more complicated inserts.

9. Inspect Your Collection Occasionally

Every so often, take a closer look at your figurines.

Check for:

  • Dust collecting in detailed areas
  • Small chips or cracks
  • Loose accessories
  • Signs of previous repair
  • Paint transfer from pieces touching one another
  • Instability on the shelf
  • Damage to boxes or foam inserts

Spotting a problem early may prevent further damage.

It is also a rather lovely excuse to properly look at and appreciate your collection again.

10. Enjoy Them

Collectors sometimes become so worried about preserving value that they forget to enjoy the pieces themselves.

Of course, careful handling and sensible storage matter, but figurines are made to be admired.

Create a display that makes you smile. Rotate pieces with the seasons. Group characters together. Give a favourite figurine pride of place.

A collection should feel personal.

Whether your shelves are beautifully organised or cheerfully overflowing, the most important thing is that the pieces bring you joy.

My Golden Rules for Figurine Care

Keep it gentle.

Use as little moisture as possible.

Avoid harsh chemicals.

Support the strongest part of the figurine when moving it.

Keep pieces away from direct sunlight, damp and heat.

And never underestimate how fragile a tiny resin finger can be.

With thoughtful care, your figurines can remain beautiful for many years — ready to be enjoyed, displayed and perhaps one day passed on to another collector who will love them just as much.
