One of the things I love most about collecting Jim Shore figurines is that every piece has its own little personality. You can line up three identical figurines with the same product number and, if you look closely enough, you'll almost certainly spot differences between them.
For some collectors, those variations can be surprising. Is one a fake? Has it been repainted? Is one more valuable than another?
In most cases, the answer is much simpler – and much more interesting!
Hand-Painted Means Truly Individual
Although Jim Shore figurines are produced in moulds, the decoration is completed by hand. Skilled artists carefully paint every pattern, facial feature, highlight and detail individually.
That means each figurine is slightly unique.
Just as no two people would paint exactly the same picture, no two Jim Shore figurines will ever be perfectly identical. In many ways, that's part of their charm.
Let's use these two Princess of Innocence figurines as an example At a first glance, they look the same - right? But look closer. Take the carousel pole - the paint stippling is clearly different. Why? Because it is hand painted. It is unique!

Where You Might Notice Differences
Collectors often spot variations in areas such as:
- Facial expressions
- Eye shape and size
- Eyelashes
- Blush on cheeks
- Colour intensity
- Gold or metallic detailing
- Shading
- Wood-effect painting
- Quilt patterns
- Floral decoration
- Placement of tiny painted details
Sometimes one Belle has slightly rosier cheeks than another. One Mickey may have brighter colours, while another has softer shading. Even something as small as the direction of a paint stroke can subtly change a figurine's appearance.
Once you start looking, it's difficult not to notice!
Why Does This Happen?
Every paint application is done by hand.
Paint thickness, brush pressure, colour mixing and drying can all create tiny differences from one production run to another.
Lighting during photography can also make colours appear warmer or cooler, which is why photographs don't always tell the whole story.
Older retired pieces may also show slight differences because production techniques, paint suppliers or factory processes changed over the years.
Production Runs Can Differ
Many popular Jim Shore figurines are produced over several years.
Although the sculpt remains the same, later production runs may have:
- Slightly different paint colours
- More vibrant or softer shading
- Different facial detailing
- Changes to metallic finishes
- Small alterations to decorative patterns
These aren't usually considered defects—they're simply part of the natural evolution of production.
Sometimes - even the size differs! Take a look at the difference in height between the two figurines. But not only the overall height, but the decorative ball on told of the carousel pole also differs!

Does It Make One More Valuable?
Sometimes—but not always.
Most collectors value condition, rarity, retired status and original packaging far more than tiny paint differences.
However, there are occasions where a particular variation becomes highly desirable.
Collectors may seek out figurines with:
- Especially attractive facial expressions
- Richer paint colours
- Stronger contrast
- Better detailing
- More symmetrical features
Occasionally an unusual paint variation becomes well known within collector communities and develops a following of its own.
Is It a Quality Control Issue?
Usually, no.
Minor variations are completely normal and are expected with hand-painted collectibles.
Quality control focuses on ensuring the figurine meets manufacturing standards rather than making every brushstroke identical.
Of course, significant paint errors, missing colours or obvious factory mistakes are different and may even become collectible in their own right, although genuine factory errors are relatively uncommon.
Why I Think It Makes Jim Shore Even More Special
To me, these little differences are part of what makes collecting Jim Shore so enjoyable.
Rather than owning exactly the same figurine as thousands of other collectors, you're owning your version of that figurine.
Perhaps your Winnie the Pooh has the sweetest smile.
Maybe your Belle has beautifully detailed eyes.
Or your Stitch has particularly vibrant colouring that immediately caught your attention.
Those tiny differences help create a connection between collector and figurine that feels much more personal.
Check out another difference I found between our two princesses - one used paint work which celebrates the folk art carving more - and the other, more refined and smooth. I can't decide which one I like more! I love them both!

Choosing the Right Piece
If you're buying in person, take your time.
Compare different examples of the same figurine and choose the one that speaks to you.
If you're buying online, always look for listings that use photographs of the actual figurine being sold rather than stock images. This allows you to appreciate those individual details before making your purchase.
At Collectable Figurines, every Jim Shore piece is photographed individually, so what you see is exactly what you'll receive. I believe those unique little differences deserve to be celebrated rather than hidden.
After all, if every Jim Shore figurine were absolutely identical... collecting would be just a little less magical.
